"I teach skiing every weekend at the local ski resort. Last night, I was riding the chair with a mother, Naomi, and her son, Derek, and as usual, I asked where the folks lived. She told me Dyersville. I said do you know my friends Dave and Forest Brown? She said Im not sure not really....Her 8-year-old son, who was listening, turned to me and said: does he dress up like Maxx, the Horse??? I have seen his commercials before, and he has used a caricature as a spokesman, but I asked, wow, you have a great memory, Derek! He said yeah, he helps me learn to read...I turned to Naomi, and she smiled. Yep, she said he has helped immensely as he, " Max," helps kids learn to read in a sponsored reading program provided by the Brown family of Dealerships.......why did this hit home?
Because not one hour before that I was speaking with a fellow instructor and she raises funds for needy causes... I asked what good she did today. She said she had received funds to help with vision and reading in kids 7 to 12. It seems our youth are struggling badly with illiteracy for several reasons. Vision and parents/ teachers who deal with difficult or struggling kids are just a few. She said a person who doesn't learn to read early is 45 percent more likely to struggle with employment and/or wages for the rest of their life... I asked Naomi how vital the program was to her kids .....she couldnt say enough how it had changed Derek's desire to read ....that silly old horse made sense to him....Dealers spend thousands each month on advertising. This dealer directed ad funds to have a lasting impact on his community ..they are actively making a difference ...quietly ....but masterfully...."
